Bidon

A bidon is a rigid bottle designed to fit into a bicycle’s bottle cage and deliver a steady supply of water or sports drink during rides.

Characteristics and usage

Bidons are usually made from squeezable plastic or lightweight aluminium. Standard capacities range from 500 to 750 milliliters, enough for about 30–60 minutes of moderate cycling. The cylindrical shape is designed to fit securely in a bottle cage mounted on the frame, allowing riders to grab the bottle and drink without stopping. Many bidons have a screw cap with a pop‑up nozzle or bite valve so the rider can squeeze fluid into their mouth with one hand. The rigid construction allows quick one‑handed handling, but unlike soft flasks they do not collapse as you drink; instead you squeeze to control flow. Bidons are an important part of road cycling, mountain biking and triathlon, where access to fluids is limited to what you carry or pick up from aid stations. Because the bottles are exposed to road grime and heat, it’s important to clean them thoroughly after each ride. Sports drink residue can ferment in warm weather, so rinsing with warm water and a bottle brush helps prevent mold and odors. Some athletes rotate multiple bidons during long events, labelling them to distinguish between carbohydrate-rich drinks and plain water.

Choosing and maintaining a bidon

When selecting a bidon, look for a soft‑squeeze body that fits your bike’s cage and a leak-resistant cap. A wide mouth makes filling and adding drink powder easier. If you plan to mix concentrated carbohydrate solutions, choose a bottle with volume markings so you can measure the right dilution. Avoid storing bidons in direct sunlight for extended periods, as heat can degrade the plastic and spoil the contents. After each ride, rinse immediately and wash with mild soap. For deep cleaning, use a bottle brush to scrub the interior and allow the bottle to dry completely before the next use.

A bidon keeps fluids easily accessible for cyclists, making it a staple for hydration and fueling during training and racing.
