Desiccant
A desiccant is a hygroscopic substance placed inside packaging to absorb moisture and keep the contents dry. It is not an ingredient in a sports drink but a protective packet that maintains dryness by drawing water vapor away from powder mixes or other components.
Purpose and types
Desiccants attract and absorb moisture from the surrounding air, maintaining a state of dryness inside sealed containers. Edco Supply explains that desiccant packs filled with hygroscopic materials remove humidity to protect food, electronics and apparel from moisture damage. Water can be eliminated either physically, by absorption, or chemically via a reaction. Common desiccant materials include silica gel, calcium chloride, activated charcoal and bentonite clay. Silica gel contains numerous pores that hold water, while calcium chloride and clay absorb moisture through their crystalline or layered structures. Desiccant packets are packaged in breathable materials like kraft paper or Tyvek so they can absorb humidity while remaining separate from the product. By maintaining a low humidity environment, desiccants prevent corrosion, mold and nutrient degradation during storage.
Applications in sports nutrition
Moisture is the enemy of dry sports drink powders and bars because it causes clumping, microbial growth and loss of shelf life. Manufacturers often add a small desiccant sachet to tubs of electrolyte powder, protein mixes or bars to keep the product dry until it is consumed. The sachet is clearly labelled “Do not eat” and should be discarded once the container is opened. Silica gel beads are the most common, but some brands use clay or activated charcoal. Desiccants work alongside anti‑caking agents and proper storage practices to ensure that powders remain scoopable and dissolve easily. Consumers should store opened products with the lid tightly closed and avoid exposing the contents to humid environments to reduce reliance on the desiccant.
Desiccants are packaging aids that protect sports drink powders and bars by absorbing moisture and maintaining dryness. They are not part of the drink itself but play an important role in preserving quality during storage.
